The largest supply of molecules are found in the mixture that we call crude oil or petroleum. These days we can separate oil into hundreds of building blocks; they are the basic petrochemical products. Through research we have learned to make thousands of different products from these materials. ExxonMobil Chemical is the largest provider worldwide of polyethylene, which eventually is converted into all kinds of packaging films, plastic bags, bottles, and many other things. In its plants in Zwijndrecht and Meerhout, ExxonMobil Chemical Belgium produces two kinds of low density polyethylene - LDPE: homopolymers and copolymers. Polyethylene copolymers are made by adding raw materials during the production process. This gives the polyethylene special characteristics. Almost all the polyethylene produced is sold in the European market, but export outside of Europe is important, too. LDPE has many applications. ExxonMobil Chemical provides its products to a large number of industries. Homopolymers are mainly used in protective coatings on paper, cardboard, aluminum foil, packaging film for food, and plastic bags. Copolymers are used in things like adhesives, shoe soles, stroller wheels and soundproofing.
