Integration: significant energy savings and cost reductions

Many of our chemical plants are integrated with the refinery, which leads to significant energy savings and cost reductions.
  • In Rotterdam, the refinery is completely integrated with the aromatics plant. The refinery supplies raw materials to the aromatics plant, which, in turn, sends by-products back to the refinery for further processing.
  • Since 2011, the Rotterdam refinery has also been integrated with the neighbouring Air Products' hydrogen plant. Integration in Rotterdam has improved site energy efficiency by approximately 15 per cent and led to a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 200,000 tonnes, which is the equivalent of the amount of CO2 produced by about 90,000 cars.
  • In Antwerp, the Performance Intermediaries Plant is completely integrated with the refinery. Different petroleum fractions form the raw materials for the production of so-called ‘fluids’. With its advanced vehicle and fuel enhancers, ExxonMobil works actively on the development of new engine technologies, which enable cars to drive more economically.
  • The engine oils in the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy series are composed of high-performance synthetic base oils and additives that protect the engine against wear and improve fuel economy

Cogeneration for ultra-high-efficiency

Cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) is the use of a heat engine or power station to generate electricity and useful heat at the same time. Because of the combined generation of electricity and steam at our refineries, our production facilities achieve an ultra-high-efficiency rating.
